Energy Efficiency
Are all vinyl windows energy efficient?
Definitely not cause like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for. There are several different
grades of windows being manufactured. Everything from a builders grade window (Yugo) to the upscale window
(Cadillac). Because of this windows were put through NFRC efficiency tests.
National Fenestration Ratings
Counsel (NFRC)
What is NFRC? NFRC is a non-profit organization that administers the
only uniform, independent rating and labeling system for the energy performance of windows, doors, skylights,
and attachment products. Our goal is to provide fair, accurate, and reliable energy performance ratings so
that:
• Architects, builders, code
officials, contractors, homeowners, and others can compare
different products and make informed product choices.
• Building officials, state
government employees, and others involved in code development and
enforcement can determine if products meet local codes.
• Government and utility run
energy efficiency programs can establish performance requirements
and standards.
• Manufacturers have a
fair and level playing field to compare products and an accurate method of showing the energy benefits of
new designs or technology.
NFRC rates in three areas. The first area that is tested is the heat transfer from
inside the home thru the window (U-Factor). The second area is the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC),
which is the heat transfer from the sun inside your home. The last area tested is the Visual
Transmittance, the light that transfers thru the window. All these tests were a combination of glass and frames
together. The lower the U-Factor and SHGC the more energy efficient the window. The higher the visual
transmittance the more light that comes in.

The Eco Window has only the best performance glass available in the industry. Low-E 366 double paned combined with argon
gas gives our window a .28 u-factor and .22 shgc. Compare to the minimum requirements for an energy star
rating.
Energy Star
Windows
What is Energy Star?
Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department
of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and
practices.
Are all windows Energy Star Rated? No, not all
windows are Energy Star rated. Energy Star divides the United States into 4 zones based on the climate. Depending
on what region you live in will depend on what requirements have to be met in order to qualify for Energy
Star.
The one thing that's looked at is the NFRC
rating on each product. For example
in the Northern region the window has to have a u-factor of .30 or lower. Windows that have a .31 or
higher, don't qualify for Energy Star.
